Fortune Amobi Jr; The dream chaser.
Our interview subject for the opening article of our new segment (Sunday interviews with Angel), Fortune amobi jr, talks about his journey to becoming an actor or as he would like to call it, chasing his dream.
The Nigeria youth is all about finding and exploring parts of himself as a creative in the acting space. In this article, he spoke to Angel of ADW about the nooks and crannies of this dream.
ADW: What do you do?
Fortune: I am an actor and a student studying film and television production.
ADW: You started out as a building student and now in films, what changed for you?
Fortune: I guess you could say my love for the scene did. I began acting when I was a kid where I had a few performances in my church and in other churches (where I was invited to perform). I stopped for years eventually because life get as e dey run things. However, I found myself visiting the theatre arts department often when I was a student of building in OAU and each time I saw actors in their element, I felt enthralled, imagining myself on a stage.
Long story short, I decided to become a professional actor in 2020. So here I am enjoying what I do.
ADW: How is it in this industry? Are there any ups and/or downs?
Fortune: Yes, there have been ups and downs. Asides the rewarding feeling of being an actor and the connections I have made along the way, there were times where I'd have to move in between shoots and that most times is hard to balance.
I remember one time I was on set as one of the lead characters for a movie when I got a call for Papa Ajasco's final screening. Till this day, I can't explain how I left that set for the screening but I am thankful to God that everything worked in my favour.
A more recent challenge is having to learn long lines which could be very tiring amongst other things.
On the bright side, acting has made me a better person. I have been able to view the world differently because I am in that scene and now I have more realistic goals, less friends, new mentors and the list goes on.
ADW: In terms of balancing, how has being on set worked out with school?
Fortune: To be honest, I have been able to balance them well although it's understandably hard.
For example, I missed a month's worth of school last year as a result of my transition and work, though I don't make it a habit because I enjoy going to school.
ADW: How was the switch and who is financing this dream?
Fortune: My switch wasn't easy! I had several interviews with my dad before he approved the decision to switch and now I think everyone is just happy for me. And my parents are financing the big dream.
ADW: How is it like being an actor in Nigeria? Do you think you'd have achieved more if you were overseas?
Fortune: Let me answer this question in terms of money and experience. Money and experience are both important, however, I'd prefer to be paid more. I believe with that money, I can chase all the experience I need.
ADW: What makes you proud as an actor?
Fortune: The accolades and respect I've and still I'm receiving from people who have been in contact with my work makes me proud. When I go out, to shops or just go about my day, people recognize me which is such a breathtaking experience that's so amazing.
ADW: What's one career you'd pursue if you were not acting? And anything on spirituality?
Fortune: That would be interior design. I believe in God not religion and I am trying to make heaven.
ADW: Tell us your favorite movie scene and your not so favourite one.
Fortune: My favorite scene has to be when papa ajasco called me an idiot and I can't remember my not so favourite scene (that should tell you how much I love it here).
Fortune aka forsche closed out the interview by sharing a life lesson as old as well, time. The young actor said, "Remember that love na scam!"
"Why?" We asked, to which he answered "Statistics have shown people breaking up everyday and I am not ready for any breakfast".
Well, cheers to him focusing on his big dream!
